Feng Shui Your Own Home | Step 2 | Balance Yin and Yang
Lesson 2.1.1
Shorten a Hallway that is Too Long

One of the most common imbalances of Yin and Yang found, especially in older homes, are long and narrow hallways.

If you have a long and narrow hallway in your home, you have excessive yin energy.

To be healthy a home needs to be slightly more yang than yin.

Today we will learn how to cure the first aspect of this Feng Shui problem: the excessive length. In the next issue we will explore the other aspect (too narrow)

Yin or Yang imbalances are cured with their opposites. A long hallway is cured by shortening it. Obviously, you cannot physically reduce the length of a hallway without causing lots of functional problems, but you need to create the illusion or visual effect that the hallway is shorter.

To cure a long hallway, place a bright colored image on the wall at the end of the hallway. This image needs to have large objects in it. This will create the impression that the hallway is not that long.

DON'T DO THIS DO THIS: DO THIS:
The biggest Feng Shui mistake you could make in a hallway is to place a mirror at the end of the hallway. This worsens the pre-existing problem, making the hallway seem twice as long as it actually is. The sunflower image is a perfect cure to counteract the excessive yin energy of a long and narrow hallway.

If you have a door or window at the end of the hallway, place a sun image above the window or door.
NO MIRRORS AT THE END OF A HALLWAY!
Notice the sharp corner that is generated at the points where the walls meet. This is a "shar" or "poison arrow" (a feature that generates turbulent energy in your Feng Shui) and it also needs to be cured. I will teach you how to cure this in a future lesson.

Why is this important?

According to Feng Shui, which shares the same principles as Traditional Chinese Medicine, excessive yin energy can worsen conditions of fear, sadness, fatigue or despondency (not caring), as well as any health condition that is also made worse by cold weather.

In their living and working environments, humans need a ratio of yang to yin of 3:2. In other words, about 60% of yang energy versus 40% of yin energy.

The word "Yin" translates as "the shady side of the hill" (colder, more humid and darker)

The word "Yang" translates as "the sunny side of the hill" (warmer, drier and lighter)
